au based on novel, Daughter of the Moon Goddess, by Sue Lynn Tan

As Autumn falls, mortals send their prayers up to the moon where my mother and I lived in solitude. It took me a long time to realize my mother was the Moon Goddess. The mortals worshipped her, making offerings to her each mid-autumn festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month when the moon was brightest. One this one night a year we stood on our balcony to stare down at the mortal realm. My mothered watched with such yearning as the scent of their incense arose to us. Her home, for she was never meant to live on the moon. In fact, it was her prison. Before I was born, my mother had taken an elixir of immortality to save our lives from thieves that had pillaged our home. That elixir had been gifted to my father, Hou Yi, The Sun Warrior, after he had slayed nine of the ten suns that threatened to burn the mortal world. But there was only enough for one and father did not want to ascend without my mother, instead he hid the elixir and only he and my mother knew where. Her body had grown weak from the pregnancy, physicians told them that neither her or I would survive the birth and soon after my father was called to battle. Alone, pregnant and with her strength draining rapidly, my mother took the elixir to save our lives. And thus, became immortal. In response to taking an elixir that had not been given to her, she was sentenced to life in solitude on the moon and therefore became the Moon Goddess and by her taking the elixir while I was a part of her body, I became immortal as well and had to remain hidden for all of my life on the moon. But I had always been intrigued by mortals. Their stories fascinated me with their struggles for love, power and survival-although I had little comprehension of such intrigues in my sheltered confined. I read everything I could lay my hands on, but my favorites stories were the tales of valiant warriors battled enemies to protect their loved ones. You see, growing up I never knew the truth of where I came from. My mother had even hidden the story of my father from me for a long time, scared to bring harm to our peaceful life on the moon. Once I learned the truth, I knew my fate held something more than to remain here. Each day the forest of osmanthus drew me closer, calling to me early in the morning shimmering dots of light like a secret beckoning me. Mother had told me I could not go. She told me of the dangers, told me that the draw would fade but as decades passed like weeks it seemed to only grow more tantalizing, overwhelming. I could not help but to reach out for it, touch the glow. And that mistake, that betrayal of my mother's rules, changed our lives forever.Visitors from the Celestial Kingdom had appeared on the edges of our fortress, the first time in the the years I had been alive, and threatened to expose it all. I could not exist, I could not be found. I could not be discovered as the daughter of the Moon Goddess. The spoke of power that had spiked from the moon, threatened to be back and I could no longer remain on the moon with my mother. And in order to protect her, I abandoned her and fled. The goal was to travel to the southern sea, where my mother's loyal attendant was from. A place to hide, a place to be safe among her family who would shield me. But to get to the southern sea, I had to travel over the celestial kingdom and with soldiers following us, there was no choice but to be dropped into the Celestial Kingdom. I landed in a small stream, just outside of the palace of the Crowned Prince. Instead of safety, I had landed in the most dangerous place I could be. I had no other choice but to abandon my mother, our hopes of being together again and descended to the mortal realm where I would hide for millennium. I still long for the moon, for my mother. And for the crowned prince of the Celestial Kingdom who had shown me kindness before the truth of my identity was revealed.

Due to having to take on a mortal form, Clover's body has deteriorated. While Immortals can be injured, their own bodies do not decay as mortals do but living in the mortal realm has changed her. She will often complain about her body pains, find herself unable to do things she used to do with ease and eventually be faced with the decision of allowing this to be the last of her life span or to ascend to the heavens again and risk harm unto her loved ones to save herself.

the leaf & lore public library located in the korean countryside not too far outside of seoul. the town is small without much economic growth nor tourism to keep it going like other countryside towns. this has lead to a close knit community but also to a town full of buildings and local businesses falling to ruin. with little to no funding from the government, the library was at risk of being closed several years ago. that's where clover came in. always a fan of the underdog and with too much money at her disposal with not much to do with it, clover loves diving in to situations exactly like this. she purchased the building and instead of relying on government funding she has fully sourced and funded the entire library collection herself - continuing it in the same nature as a public library.she doesn't live in the town but she does own a house there, visiting often and making sure to contribute to the local economy as much as possible.

in fact, last year clover began a youtube channel dedicated to reading and books. every drop of compensation earned from her work on the channel goes into the town. she's not sure if the citizens know and pretend they don't or genuinely are clueless as to how their town has avoided redevelopment.still, she's happy to keep them going. typical for a dryad to get attached to a village that treats her well. all they have to do is ask, bargain anything. when they come into the library and donate books, chat with clover about things that could improve their lives - clover takes note and it's not long after that they find themselves with just that thing.she doesn't have much reason to seek financial gain these days, having lived for as many years as she has. so she will spend her lasting years helping those who may need it far more than she does.

there are, of course, multiple forms of income. not just from offering classes that can be taken at the library, running her youtube account or even the success of her band. clover wouldn't be herself if it weren't for her secrets. for as long as she can remember, she's been writing under her full name. wang xiao mu has published books as far back as six hundred years ago. from romance to mysteries and thrillers. she's even dabbled in a bit of non-fiction when she got really into journaling throughout her second century of life and decided to publish them as a study of the time instead. many assume the author name is just a coincidence. perhaps multiple authors using the same pen name or perhaps some who just happen to have the same name. there's never been any information on any of them - no photos published, no interviews or press tour. it's almost as if the books simply come into existence out of nowhere.
